This system needs to have a flat surface but it can be almost anything: tile floor, a plastic-covered sheet of cement/concrete floor, plywood, metal or glass.
The water wicks up from the bottom so it doesn’t squeeze the oxygen out of your planting mix or disturb delicate seed sprouts like hand-watering easily does. Simply:
1- Prepare an even and flat surface; if the surface is able to absorb water, cover it with a piece of plastic sheet to size.
2- Set the capillary mat over the prepared surface, and cover it over with the black foil (which helps inhibit algae growth on the mat)
3- Soak the Surface Blumat and fill it as you would a regular Blumat carrot. Hook the surface blumat to your gravity tank and place it on the capillary mat UNDER the black foil and attack the distributor drippers.
4- Adjust the mat moisture to the desired moisture level.
(NOTE: make sure you check the setting of the surface blumat once every 1-2 weeks and refill it with water when necessary)!
5- Place your seed starting trays/pots, 1-5 gallon Smart Pots and your Microgreens and Baby Greens tray on top the black foil and watch them grow!
It can be used in smaller trays and up to size 120x120cm when needed. Just cut the mat to the desired size.
Multiple trays can be set on shelving units or tables for vertical gardens (for microgreen, babygreens and germinating/seedling/rooting trays)!
